During labor and delivery of a newborn, both mother and child experience enormous amounts of structural and physiological changes. This can potentially lead to difficulties later in life for the mother and the baby. Some of this can be prevented or reduced through gentle, manipulative treatment to allow the safest birthing process for both.
Cranial Osteopathy at our Waterloo and Canary Wharf clinics is a different approach to Osteopathy used throughout the whole body. It is a gentle, safe and effective treatment for a wide range of problems.
Cranial Osteopathy Pre and Postnatal
Cranial Osteopathy care throughout the pregnancy provides women with the special benefit of adjusting the mother’s body to cope with the increasing demands of the pregnancy. It helps to alleviate some of the pains and problems associated with changes in posture, weight bearing, and the stretching of various ligaments and tissues that support the pelvis and uterus. It prepares the body for labour and helps the woman recover from the traumas and strains imposed during the birth process.
Lower back pain is one of the most common symptom experienced at some point during pregnancy. However it can be very manageable. It is normally caused by alignment issues in posture caused by the baby’s weight. It is to the mother-to-be’s benefit to have an Osteopathic assessment.
We also advise that babies and mothers should be checked by a Cranial Osteopath after certain births, such as:
- long labour
- very short labour (less than 4 hours)
- atypical delivery including forceps, ventouse/ vacuum
- Caesarian birth
- multiple pregnancy
Cranial Osteopathy For Babies
The treatment of a newborn begins with treatment of the mum’s body to facilitate easy birth and optimum growth. Birth itself is a huge physical challenge. If the process follows an optimum sequence of compressions, rotation and expansion it will give a baby minimal trauma but even a normal birth can impart degrees of trauma which may affect the baby immediately or later in development.
We can treat babies suffering from the following conditions:
- feeding difficulties
- birth strains
- baby preferring to turn the head to one side
- delays in growth and development
- general unsettledness
- colic/bowel difficulties
- repeated ear infections
- stuffiness/ blocked nose
- head shape asymmetry (plagiocephaly)
- sleep disturbances
What to Expect From a Session
During the treatment some people may be aware of different sensations, such as mild tension, aching or sensitivity that gradually disappears, or of feelings of warmth and relaxation. Others are unaware of anything happening at all during the treatment but at the end they feel very different. Most people become deeply relaxed and it is not uncommon for people to fall asleep. Babies tend to become deeply relaxed and can be treated on the mother’s arms.
